Black Girls Brilliance

Black Girls Brilliance (BGB) imagines a world where Black girls* are free from over-policing, sexual violence and harassment, and systemic oppression within their schools and the communities they live in. We center Black Girls narratives to co-create programs that provide them with the support needed to flourish.

* “girls” refers to gender-expansive youth (cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth and any girl-identified youth)

BGB Events

Our Black Girls Brilliance (BGB) Cyferskuil chapter attended a special field trip in partnership with the National Botanical Society of South Africa to introduce them to STEM career opportunities.

Black Girls Healing Circles

Our BGB Oakland chapter returned to school in the Fall of 2021. Our leadership team recognized that our girls* needed additional support as they transitioned back to in-person learning.

Cyferskuil, South Africa, Launch

In May of 2021, Black Girls Brilliance partnered with two primary schools in the Cyferskuil community. BGB’s program is endorsed by the community council, parents, and educators.

Program Goals for 2022 - 2023

  • Introduce Cohorts 2 and 3 to the BGB South Africa chapter.

  • Hire 2 adult leaders to teach BGB curriculum, and lead Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) projects.

BGB Oakland chapter at Montera Middle School partnered with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), the Alliance for Girls, Betti Ono, and The Unity Council’s Latinx Mentorship and Achievement (LMA) Program to launch the Not One More Girl Campaign in April 2021. This campaign engaged local girls in the Bay Area and gender expansive youth about their experiences on BART and to develop campaign materials to serve as BART’s first ever sexual harassment prevention campaign.
